Balance bikes are not only for kids wanting to learn to ride a pedal bike. Balance bikes are a great way to get a child with special needs onto a bike and enjoy the benefits that other kids have.  We have fitted kids on many of our bikes over the years. There is a maasive amount of unfairness in the world when it comes to children who are either born with or acquire a disability.  We feel strongly that every child should be afforded the opportunity to ride a bicycle.

My wife is a first grade teacher at a local elementary school.  Her school was one of the first instances we placed a bike specifically for use of a Special Needs child back in 2009.  The child had a stroke at a young age which left her right arm weakened and lacking the strength and coordination that is easy to take for granted on a healthy child.  Due to this, the child had self-esteem and confidence issues.  Imagine watching other kids do things that would be a struggle for you?  We ended up bringing in a Glide Bikes Go Glider, with the 16" wheels (the child was a a little older and larger than a normal kindergartner).  After some introduction of the bike to the child and adjusting the seat and handlebars for the proper height it was time to get the child on the bike. After some apprehension the child mounted the bike and sort of sat there on the seat in amazement - first time the child was on a bike!  Over the next few weeks the child rolled around the carpeted classroom.  As days went by, the comfort level of the child on the balance bike increased.  Withe increase in comfort level, along came more confidence adn happiness.  The child was proud of the bike and being able to ride around like other kids.  At the end of the school year we gave the bike to the child as we knew how important it was to him.  This is just one instance where a bike can make a difference.
